October, a warm and sunny day in the limestone quarry near Burglengenfeld. I am visiting the cement plant together with a team from LBV, the largest Bavarian nature conservation organisation for discussion with the plant manager.
Apart from the breeding peregrine falcon on the factory stack, his plant is well known for the variety of ecological projects implemented by researchers and local school groups and is considered a best practice example when it comes to biodiversity management. LBV is hoping to get the manager’s agreement to include the quarry into a national conservation scheme for rare amphibians. Few days later this was confirmed. The local Yellow bellied toad population has found a safe home in the quarry.
